Entrance Exams and Prep Courses

All candidates for the Department of English Language & Literature are required to take a written Entrance Exam.

Entrance Exam

  • The undergraduate entrance examination tests the candidates’ written expression abilities and includes a 600-word essay (two and a half pages) on a general topic. The examinee must choose one topic or question out of three.
  • The Master’s degree entrance exam examines English writing and analytical skills. It does not require prior knowledge or expertise. Candidates will have to write a 600-800 word essay that requires an analysis of a short literary text (poetry or prose) to be presented.
  • The exam length is two hours. An ID must be brought to the exam. Undergraduate candidates may only bring a printed dictionary with them. All applicants may only apply for one examination date per year.
  • The results of the exam will be posted on the student’s personal portal, in the candidate status tab. No personal acceptance or rejection messages will be sent. After the exam results are published, it will not be possible to dispute the results or see the exam paper.

Prep Course

This 3-part, 11-session course is designed to introduce the department to potential BA students; to introduce them to the methods and study materials they will encounter during their degree, and of course, to prepare them for the entrance exam. The course is not a substitute for any admission requirements, but participation in it significantly increases the chances of admission. It is available for free and is presented entirely online; therefore it is highly recommended for all candidates. The course contains eight pre-recorded sessions that are 45 minutes long and will be available on Moodle. At the end of Part One (Session 4), there will be an online quiz to check progress. Sessions 7, 10, and 11 will be live on Zoom. The entrance exam takes place a few days after the last session.
