The Single-Major track offers an extensive grounding in the history of the literatures and cultures of the English-speaking world, as well as knowledge of genres, currents, and new literary theories.

First year (a total of 26 Credits)
Academic Writing A: 4 Hours, 3 Credits.*
Academic Writing B: 4 Hours, 3 Credits.**
Introduction to Poetry & Drama: 4 Hours, 4 Credits.
Survey I: 4 Hours, 4 Credits.
Survey II: 4 Hours, 4 Credits.
Introduction to Narrative Fiction: 4 Hours, 4 Credits.
Proseminar: 4 Hours, 4 Credits – semester B\summer semester.
Total – 28 Weekly Hours, 26 Credits.
*”Academic Writing A” is a prerequisite to “Academic Writing B”.
**The course “Academic Writing B” is required in the first year. A passing grade in this course (minimum 65) is required to continue to the second year.
Second year (a total of 28 Credits)
Survey III: 4 Hours, 4 Credits.
Survey IV: 4 Hours, 4 Credits.
Intro to Theory and Criticism: 4 Hours, 4 Credits.
4 Proseminars: 16 Hours, 16 Credits.
Total – 28 Weekly Hours, 28 Credits.
2 Proseminars: 8 Hours, 8 Credits.
3 Seminars: 12 Hours, 15 Credits.*
Departmental Seminar: 2 Hours, 3 Credits.**
Total – 22 Weekly Hours, 26 Credits.
It is the student’s responsibility to construct their class schedule in accordance with the requirements of the curriculum, the University, and the Department.
Academic Writing: Each student must pass the courses “Academic Writing A” and “Academic Writing B” with a grade of at least 65. Failing to do so requires retaking the course. A student who has not successfully completed both of these courses will not be able to register for second-year courses.
English as a Foreign Language requirement: all students of the Department must complete their University English requirement and reach an exemption level by the end of their first year. This condition is a prerequisite for continuing studies in the Department, and for moving on to an advanced year.
Notes for the Single-Major track students:
- Students in the single-major track study 80 credits in the English Department and 40 credits outside the Department.
- The student may complete all 40 required points outside the Department in one defined unit and separate courses.
- The student must take at least 20 credits in at least one defined unit (“Mikbatz”, as elaborated in the University Course Catalog). In this unit, the student must write a seminar paper.
- The student will choose the balance of credits (20 credits) from the courses offered in the various departments, subject to the requirements of the department in which the course is given and with the consent of the English Department BA Advisor. At least 16 credits must be in Level 2 or 3 courses.
- A student in the single-major track can choose another foreign language as part of their studies outside the Department (up to 8 semester hours per week for which they will be awarded no more than 4 credits).
General Notes for the BA:
- Seminar courses are for third-year students only. The seminar paper will be submitted to the lecturer according to their instructions, and a digital copy will be sent to the Department Coordinator.
- A student in the Double-Major track will not be able to study more than three elective courses with the same lecturer.
- A student in the Single-Major track will not be able to study more than four elective courses with the same lecturer.
- A student who has already taken an advanced level 2 or level 3 course will not be able to re-take a level 1 course in the same field in order to improve their grade average in the BA.
- The Department requires a mandatory attendance of at least 80 percent in each course.
- Students may not enroll in concurrent courses.
- The computerized registration system is built in accordance with the curriculum and the department’s rules.
Examinations and passing conditions (for both tracks):
- Final grades will be determined on the basis of active participation in class, and a combination of scores in assignments, exercises, and exam/s, as determined in the course requirements.
- A student who fails a required course must retake it in the following year, but will not be allowed to do so more than once (in accordance with the University’s undergraduate regulations).
- The Department may discontinue the studies of a student who fails two courses in their first year. A first-year student who fails three courses will not be able to continue their studies.
- A student who fails four courses during their BA studies will not be allowed to continue their studies.
- A student who fails an elective may take another course in its place.
- A student may not repeat a course in which they have received a passing grade, except with the approval of the BA Advisor.
- The passing grade for all courses is 60, except for the “Academic Writing” courses, in which the passing grade is 65.
- Conditions for the transition from the first year to the second year are a weighted average of at least 65 for the Double-Major track and at least 75 for the Single-Major track. Students in the Single-Major track must maintain a weighted average of at least 75 throughout their studies in the Department.
- The Department may discontinue the studies of a student who fails to complete their first-year requirements within the first two years of studies.
- The Department may discontinue the studies of a student who fails the “Academic Writing” course/s.
- “Academic Writing B” is a required first-year course. A passing grade in this course (minimum 65) is required to continue to the second year.
- In Level 1 and 2 courses, students will fulfill all requirements (exercises, assignments, midterm exams) before attending the final exam.
- In Level 3 courses (seminars), students will fulfill all other requirements before submitting the seminar paper.
- Submission dates of all assignments are at the discretion of the course lecturer, and in accordance with the University Yearbook regulations.
Degree Closure – Completion of BA requirements: After completing their academic requirements, students must submit their request to “close the degree” to the Department Coordinator. The Department Coordinator will report the final weighted average to the Alumni Office after the student signs their approval.
