For in-text quotations, use slashes to show original line breaks in a poem. After the quotation, indicate the line numbers after the author’s last name in parentheses. If no line numbers are printed in the text, count the line numbers yourself.

At the end of the first quatrain, the speaker announces that “The Carriage held but just Ourselves / and Immortality” (3-4).

A block quotation is indented and the citation information is provided at the end of the last line quoted. Use this for four lines or more. Example:

Strikingly, the poem’s imagery is more conceptual than physically detailed:

Because I could not stop for Death
He kindly stopped for me
The Carriage held but just Ourselves
             And Immortality. (1-4)
