Program of Study
Teaching English as
a Foreign Language (TEFL)
A joint program of the Department of English Language and
Literature and the Department of Teaching and Teacher Education
Aim of the program
1) To provide advanced training in the psychological, pedagogical,
philosophical, and linguistic theories related to language
teaching and learning, as well as in modern research tools
of the discipline.
2) To foster leadership in the research and practice of Teaching
English as a Foreign Language.
Structure of the program
Students may select the Track A program, which requires
36 semester hours of course work and a thesis, or the Track
B program, which requires 44 semester hours of course work
and a comprehensive examination.
For Track A, students must complete 4 or 5 courses in the
English Department and 4 or 5 courses in the Teacher Education
Department. 2 of the courses must be seminar courses requiring
research papers.
For Track B, students must complete 5 or 6 courses in the
English Department and 5 or 6 courses in the Teacher Education
Department. 3 of these must be seminar courses requiring research
papers.
The Track A program should be completed in 3 years , and
the Track B- in 2 years.
Entrance requirements
1) BA in English,
minimum grade average 80, and BA in Teacher Education or a
Teaching Certificate, minimum grade average 80.
2) Students will
be allowed to apply for the program in the following cases:
a) A grade average of 76-79 in English with at least 3 years
of teaching experience in a high school.
b) A Teaching License instead of a Teaching Certificate with
at least 5 years of teaching experience in a high school.
3) Applicants who
did not take a BA course in statistics will be required to
do so.
4) Applicants who
have a B.Ed. must present documents that show the weighted
grade average of their degree, and will be required to take
make-up courses, according to the decision of our MA committee.
5) The MA Program
Committee may require candidates to pass an entrance examination,
and take make-up courses.
6) Applicants who
have a BA from an academic institution whose language of teaching
is not Hebrew will be accepted on the condition that they
pass a test in Hebrew, according to the requirements of the
University.
